As most said, this was truly a huge disappointment. And like most, I've also read the books countless times, over and over again. Everything about it really stank. I never even finished the first fifteen minutes. And I only watched it that long out of curiousity and I was trying to teach my nephew the characters... I didn't realize it was coming out to DVD until I saw it in a BestBuy ad, and I was going to go buy it right away, but I'm glad I didn't get the chance to, and that someone had rented first.

For the producers of this movie that has made me take out my books to read again just so I can overwrite the images in my head from the movie, take a note from Record of Lodoss War (original series). That was a great animated fantasy, and that was done some ten years ago. I seriously don't know why this movie could have been as bad as this was. What a shame. But... you can always pick yourself up and do it again. It won't erase the fact of this movie, but at least you'll have a chance to redeem yourself, and maybe even bring the loyal fans back as well.

You got a great point there. The records of lodoss wars was an excellent d&d animated series example. And it wasn't even based on original characters from d&d.Still i enjoyed every moment of it and loved the characters and story...The producers and everyone responsible for this really dissapointing film should watch and learn from records of lodoss wars about how a D&D film should be...And yes it was about 10 years ago...

NEG-what happened? why did the story get so chopped up? i know you couldn't fit everything but the movie was only 90 minutes long! and why make the changes like you did? i just don't get it?!
it would take a long time and space to list all that I noticed wrong in the movie so i won't but all i want to know is why is this the final production? it's missing much of the things that separates dragonlance from the other fantasy worlds out there. there was little to no character development and it was missing(or they got changed) allot of the funny quirks of fizban and the other main characters.
i felt that much of the story was left untold in the movie and that we really only got the skeleton of the story which is a shame because it's such a great story.
please if the scenes were made that included more of the story please, please make a special addition that includes them and if such scenes don't exist please don't chop up the next one as much.

PRO- on the positive side my wife who hasn't read the books now wants too and atleast the basic story is out there for the public to view and hopefully be like my wife and want to read the books
i can only hope that this movie and the others to fallow will be like the ones done for the lord of the rings and be turned into a live action movies in the future.
i also have to say that i will buy the movie but more for the name than the actual show and to show my support for dragonlance which i hope you make money off the movie so others can follow and eventually a live action version hopefully.
also the casting was done well and the music selection was good but it made it hard to hear dialog sometimes (mostly raistin)

I'm not going into a huge list, everyone knows what was wrong.

I feel like I'm mourning the death of a childhood friend, and I seriously hope they don't raise it from the dead, just so they can kill it again. I know if they make the second, I'll be compelled to watch it, and I don't want to cry. I grew up on these books, reading them over and over...I just watched it 5 minutes ago, and I'm hoping for head trauma leading to amnesia.

I have to rant, I have to get it off of my chest. I haven't even read this thread, so I'll probably rehash what's been said, if so, I apologize.

They killed everything that I loved about these books.

Where are the dynamics in the relationships between Caramon and Raistlin? Tas and Flint?

Tas was nothing like in the books. Where was his absence of fear? His inquisitive and overbearing sense of discovery?

Raistlin didn't even begin to give off the aura of evil and/or dark. He just came across as frail and able to do a few magic tricks.

Don't even get me started on the abysmal animation!!!! It was TERRIBLE. I felt like I was watching a mid 80's re-run of He-Man. And although that was great to me as a ten year old child, the nostalgia wore off long ago. With animation being as amazing as it is these days, there's no reason or excuse whatsoever not to do better than that.

I love these books, I've read them all several times. They are very dear to me, and I appreciate that an effort was even made to bring them to life. But it was not good.

Even though my comments are unlikely to be read this far in the thread list, I wish to put in my opinion.

First off, to those who defend this movie with "at least they tried". Think of any product that you might buy today that you would seriously consider buying if you knew they threw quality control out the window, hired the most dirt cheap subcontractors that they could dig up, yet still put said product on the market. (Almost sounds like some chinese products now that I make that comparison...lead anyone?) I would hope that you would say "I would never give my hard earned money for something so poorly made". Well the same should be said for this movie.

I would not have had an issue with it if they had done a genuine attempt at the thing, but you have to admit that the animation looked like a bad youtube creation. I have seen speed racer episodes with smoother animation.

And why on Earth did they decide to mix CG with cartoon style? It obviously does not mesh well at all. Yes, some of the dragons looked ok, but the cut-n-paste draconians were so stiff and unbelieviable. The best CG is the kind that you forget its CG. This CG was like it wanted you to know it was bad CG the whole time. And what the heck was with all the dang lens flares? The movie was less about Krynn and the adventurers and more about the evil lens flares of doom. Big lens flares, small lens flares...it was madness.

And one last thing, and this is just nitpicking the rotting carcass. Shouldn't a plains peoples village (even destroyed) look more like a village with huts and stuff and less like a monumental stone city? I notice noone has mentioned that yet.

Predjudice??? What does prejudice have to do with anything? I don't like Japanimation, either. I just don't like like the way it looks. It's too cutsie...too kiddie. If the movie had been drawn that way, I wouldn't have watched it at all. It has nothing to do with prejudice, many people just don't like that style.

You would not watch it if it were in an anime style but you sat through it with the S*it animation it had...you really need to take a look at priorities. As as the guy after you stated, you need to watch more serious anime and quit making your opions based on Dragon Ball Z, Yu Ge OH (or however you spell it), or anything else that Fox chooses to air.

Agreed. I couldn't find any good, "for older people" anime. This was the best I could come up with:

But that just goes to show you that there is more to anime than Pikachu and fairies.

I've always wanted to see Jin-Roh, I think I'll Netflix it. I've seen the Cowboy Bebop movie as well as Berserk, both of which are very good. I would have to recommend Death Note (kick ass series on Cartoon Network), Wolf's Rain (though the ending really sucked! ), and Perfect Blue (very intense; to this day I can't watch the whole thing from beginning to end in one sitting, it's disturbing to say the least).

And just to make sure this post is pertinent to this thread: IT REALLY SUX DONKEY BALLS THAT THE DRAGONLANCE MOVIE WAS LIMITED TO 90 MIN. WITH A SHOESTRING BUDGET. I'VE BEEN READING DRAGONLANCE NOVELS SINCE BEFORE WEIS AND HICKMAN EVEN WROTE THEM, BUT NOW I DON'T KNOW I CAN'T HELP BUT FEEL MY GRIPING ISN'T GETTING THROUGH TO ANYBODY. AAAAAARRRRRGGGHH THAT MAKES ME SO MAD!

Haha, actually what that anime style image looks like is one of those low framerate animated clips from those adult pc games the Japanese are so known for. Especially the snappish boob bounce, I'd almost guess it's from one of the Viper series.

It's too bad you couldn't find any good "for adults" type anime given how much is out there. Unless of course its anime porn lol.

Here's a boatload of links I posted last year when the anime topic raised it's head as it always inevitably seems to.

And guess what, first here's an popular American franchise that's being made into a direct to dvd movie, in "anime" style by Japanese anime directors and studios:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oW71WB254M&e

quote:
more "adult" anime
- "beyond" on the Animatrix DVD
- "magnetic rose" from "memories" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9mR7Rit4h8
which is a compliation of 3 of the most diverse japanese animated films you will see in one compilation (under the oversight of otomo what's his name.. creator of akira). the last film "cannon fodder" of this series on "memories" looks like something straight out of east europe.
(stink bomb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8HT_A6P12w ; cannon fodder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A38eJpO44X4&feature=related

here's some more stuff by Koji Morimoto.
To clarify, only "magnetic rose" from "memories" was directed by Morimoto. The other 2 were by different directors.

- Comedy - a short film : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIvKp8r64-8
- Glay - Survival music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_Qoe2Wstic
- Clip from "beyond" which I'm sure most people may have seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaWOFmMiXZ4
- Extra - another music vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhy3qe0Oeh4

Many of the clips above are from Studio 4C, which produces some really nice stuff. Here is a trailer of work by Studio 4c: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUO19QrYvko

If you're a Miyazaki fan, and even if you're not, this music video by him is a must see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGeMlii4ugI
Has my favorite obsessions, as well as Miyazaki's: flying & clouds =)
As beautiful as his films are, the only issue I have is w/ his character designs where all his female lead characters look the same! Argh.. I think only the girl in spirited away finally looked different from the rest.

My favorite Miyazaki film is Porco Rosso
Here's a compilation of many Ghibli studio clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD58ZTVm7Qs

Here's some beautiful work by a more independent film maker who finally has a studio to back him up - Matoko Shinkai. Definitely upped the production values and has gotten some decent looking characters (his early stuff was gah.. and often off model in animation): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8eoU7zp9Ls
- One of his earlier works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da6-ncCtwnA
Has the stereotypical anime character design, but awesome backgrounds and some nice cinematography

And as already mentioned, some Satoshi Kon (his female leads often look the same as well!):

- Paprika - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7dlzF6ZSIg
- Perfect Blue - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us3w5eeG5JU

Some people just don't like anime. I don't understand why some people can't understand this. Showing them the best anime in the world isn't going to make most people like the style anymore.

That said this isn't a topic about anime. If you wanna talk about it open a topic in the film forum.

Hang on Sirch. Before you start waving your "move along" flag can I just quickly throw down these two links for two anime shorts that just blew my mind out the back of my head.

I really, really hope Mr. Obvious sees these links cause I know she is a big animation fan and should get a kick out of the strange animation. It is super freaky deaky stuff!

And no Vassor Doss, it is NOT Anime porn.
